Grace

A punch which changed everything

Toro Babies Home - Grace

Hi! My name is Grace, I’m three years old and I’ve spend my whole life in the Toro Babies Home.

My biological mother had experienced domestic violence during her pregnancy with me which caused bleedings and a premature labour. Because of that she died during labour and my father is since that time in prison. I’ve seen him only two times and my grandmother has visited me once but my relatives are not really interested in me. – I will see if I have to go back to my father when he is out of prison or to my relatives.

Miracle

A miracle out of a latrine

Toro Babies Home - Miracle

Hello, I’m Miracle and I’m a miracle. I’m three years old and they’ve brought me in the Toro Babies Home when I was a few hours old.

My father left my pregnant mother without any financial support, so she decided to put me in a plastic bag and through me in the latrine of the neighbours immediately after I was born. She left me there, but luckily the neighbours heard me crying, saved me out of the latrine and alerted the police. I was completely full of excrements and maggots. – It’s a miracle that I’m living, that I’m healthy and that I can laugh!

My mother isn’t in the prison anymore and visits me once in a while. The other relatives are not interested in me.

Dorothy

17 years in the Toro Babies Home

Toro Babies Home - Dorothy

Hey! My name is Dorothy and I’m 17 years old. My mother was mentally sick when I was born so she couldn’t care for me. Since that I’m living here in the Toro Babies Home. I always go for review because of my mental sickness and when I take the medication I’m fine. My mental sickness doesn’t effect the children and I can help my mother in house 3.

I don’t know where my biological mother is now and other relatives are not known. So I think I’m going to stay here, but what will happen in ten years?

Patience Kala

Premature Baby

Toro Babies Home - Patience Kala

This is Patience Kala born with only 1690 gram in March 2021 and she is our youngest child at the moment. Kala is a premature baby of a mentally sick mother, who stayed with her the first week but could not care for Patience. We can only estimate that she was born in the seventh to eighth month when they brought her here. Her health status was critical – she was very small and had infections in her eyes and navel.

It is hard for our mothers to care for premature babies in comparison to other children because they have special needs and they have to keep them warm. After three month she had a very strong pneumonia and she needed oxygen in the hospital. She stayed there for a few days with our relief mother so the other mothers could not have their day-off in the week.

Fortunately, she improved after that and is becoming stronger day by day in general.

Kanyana

Abandoned and malnourished

Toro Babies home - Kanyana

This is Kanyana and her estimated age was about one year when she has arrived. Her parents are refugees from Rwanda and they abandoned her and her three more siblings in a village. The oldest girl (12 years) tried to take care about the younger ones (nine years, three years and one years), but could not feed Baby Kanyana. Kanyana came in a very malnourished condition into the Toro Babies Home. The mothers fed her up very well and we can see her running around and smiling a lot. Unfortunately, we could not admit the other siblings as well because they were

Nyakato and Nyangoma

The third set of twins

Toro Babies home - Nyakato and Nyangoma

The twins Nyakato and Nyangoma and they were born in May 2019 into a very poor family. The 22 years old mother already gave birth to two more sets of twins who did not survive. Nyakato and Nyangoma were her third twins but this time she did not survive during labour. The father could not take care of such young babies so they brought them in the Toro Babies Home. He is visiting them once in a while and is going to take them back when they reach the age of three years.
